Artist biography
Warwick Edgington was born in Rotorua, 1963 and was brought up in Wellington. He has lived and worked for many years in Sydney, Australia.
In the early 1980s Warwick studied for a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Otago in Dunedin, initially focussing on political philosophy, and it was there began to learn and to make jewellery. At the time Dunedin had become home to a strong group of contemporary jewellers and silversmiths, including the late Georg Beer and Kobi Bosshard from the celebrated Fluxus group, and Steven Mulqueen, all of whom taught and mentored Warwick at Otago Polytechnic, where he obtained his Certificate in Craft Design in 1989.
Today Warwick works with the beautiful natural materials associated with New Zealand—pounamu, paua shell, mother of pearl, and carnelian from the Coromandel Peninsula near Auckland on the North Island. He sets these into unexpected dialogues with metals including silver and forged stainless steel, but also with mirror and black rubber.
