Artist Biography

Euan Macleod was born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1956. He gained a Diploma of Fine Arts from the Ilam School of Fine Arts, Canterbury University in 1979, before moving to Sydney, where he still resides, in 1981.

Euan has held more than 50 solo shows in New Zealand and Australia, and has taken part in numerous group exhibitions both in Australasia, and internationally. His work is represented in many private and public collections, including Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand, the National Gallery of Australia, and the Metropolitan Museum, New York. Euan has won numerous Australian art prizes, including the Archibald in 1999, the Sulman Prize in 2001, the Blake Prize in 2006, the New South Wales Parliament’s inaugural Plein Air painting prize in 2008, the Tattersall’s Landscape Prize in 2000 and 2009, the Gallipoli Art Prize, 2009, and the King’s School Art Prize in 2011. In 2020, he collaborated with Lloyd Jones on High Wire, a book of drawings and words, which was published by Massey University Press.

Macleod’s practice deals predominantly with landscapes, but the recuring inclusion of mysterious, often indistinct figures, alters the way we read his work. Whether these figures were intended as self-portrait, or as a symbol of universal experience, Macleod’s expressive, textured brushstrokes create an environment where the sense of disquiet, the feeling of enduring, is such that you can feel the biting cold, the fierce wind, and the warmth of the fire, as if this journey was your own.
