Yvette Velvin

Artist biography

Yvette Velvin was born in Palmerston North. She attended the College of Creative Arts at Massey University, and gained a BFA with first-class honours. She is currently living in Auckland, and teaching at Blockhouse Bay Intermediate School.

Yvette’s first appearance at Bowen was as part of Four Young Artists, in 2017. Since then, she has featured in group shows around Wellington, and has hosted solo shows at both Bowen Galleries, and Toi Pōneke. Her painting, Wild Thoughts, is held in the Wellington City Council Art Collection.

Yvette’s work features a strong focus on still life. She views her practice as “a way to record things, a kind of meditative appreciation of objects, treasures, and precious things – both actual ‘things’ like ephemera, but also more sentimental feeling, moments, and memories”. Colour plays a central role in her practice. She wants her paintings to be “luminous and bright”, with deep, heavy pops of pure colour offsetting pastel colours and washes.
