Rocket Racer has been a long time in the making. For over a decade, Jeff Thomson has been exploring different ways in which he can incorporate vintage toys into his practice. In Rocket Racer over 80 tin toys, including planes, trains, cars, and figures, have been selected from Jeff’s personal collection, and sourced from trade-me and local second-hand shops. The toys have been manually flattened and reconfigured, by Jeff’s 25 tonne press, and been put through a roll former, a machine used for shaping corrugated iron. In signature Jeff Thomson style, what emerged from this process is a cohesive, playful, and endlessly fascinating body of work in which the relationship between the materials and the making process allows for new ways of experiencing the familiar.
